5-9 July 2009, Adelaide, South Australia

AMSA2009 International Conference will be held in Adelaide, South Australia from 5 - 9 July 2009 at the Adelaide Convention Centre, with the theme of Marine Connectivity.

The conference will be the 46th Annual Conference for the Australian Marine Sciences Association Inc. The conference will address the “What”, “Where & How” and “Why” of marine connectivity. Connectivity has implications for biogeographic distributions, resilience and resource management and protection. Further sessions will be dedicated to novel methods to study connectivity, and on improved networking of the scientific community.

Hub scientists have developed three special symposia:

SS1: Spatial genetic insights into the connectivity of marine populations
This symposium will focus on contemporary Australian and international research that is applying population genetic methods to the understanding of contemporary and historical spatial connectivity in marine populations. It will also be a forum for research that combines approaches from diverse fields including genetics, oceanography, physics and ecology. Organisers: Phillip England (CSIRO) & Madeleine van Oppen (AIMS)

SS8: The application of multibeam acoustics to mapping seabed habitats and predicting patterns of biodiversity
This symposium will bring together a range of scientists who work in marine acoustics, seabed habitat characterisation and benthic biodiversity assessment and prediction. It will provide insights into both the technical challenges of working with multibeam data and the application of these data to mapping and modelling benthic habitats and biodiversity at a wide range of spatial scales. Organisers: James Daniell (GA), Justy Siwabessy (GA), Rudy Kloser (CSIRO) & Brendan Brooke (GA)

SS9: The use of towed video to characterise benthic habitats and fauna: the state of the art in Australia
This special symposium will examine the towed video survey technology and techniques developing at research institutes around Australia and how data from video transects is being used to answer questions about marine resource use and conservation at a range of spatial scales. The session will be geared to inform researchers unfamiliar with towed video surveys and promote discussion of future developments and applications among those already using it. Organisers: Matthew McArthur (GA) & Tara Anderson (GA)

Abstracts submission closes:  30 January 2009
